When I heard Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery and oldest regional brewery,  was celebrating their 190th anniversary this year, my curiosity got the best of me. Did I read that right? One hundred and ninety years?  It takes passion and determination to keep a company running for that long. Today, D. G. Yuengling & Son is operated by its 6th generation. This information did not mean much to me until I found out they were ALL women (4 sisters). As a boss mom myself, I understand what it means to lead a company. Or in the Yuengling case, a big company. Their story truly inspired me to keep going.  That’s why I went to my local Kroger and got a few cases of Yuengling beer to celebrate women empowerment and all the boss moms out there!

Yuengling Inspired Me To Celebrate Myself

If you told me 5 years ago this blog would be a source of income, I would tell you to wake up because you are dreaming. But helping women find the right hair and skincare products, and sharing my personal experiences with them became a way of life. Only my husband can tell you how hard I work to get the blog to where it is now. I know it’s not much, but I am happy I did not give up. But you know what, despite everything that I have accomplished, I never took a moment to celebrate me. Celebrating yourself is not selfish. You deserve it! Whether you have a blog, a podcast, or a small online shop, you are a small business owner. If you spend money on a photographer, a makeup artist, a cameraman, an assistant, you are helping other people make their dreams come true. When you buy products or services to grow your business, you are also growing the US economy. You are not just a certified mom, you are what this country needs.

What Being a boss mom means to me

I grew up watching my mom sell clothes to our neighbors. She did not only sell clothes, she also sold mangos when it was the mango season. As a single mom, she did what was necessary to take care of me and my siblings. Although she never said it, I could always feel that sense of pride in her.

After we got married in 2005, my husband and I agreed that I was going to be a stay-at-home-mom. But when the time came  for me to be a mom, things were not the way I expected them to be. Taking care of my first born was rewarding, but I felt bored. I also felt like I was not contributing financially. So I started selling clothes online. Sounds familiar?  I made pretty good money, too. And just like my mama did, I started feeling proud of myself. I had my own thing going, and it felt good!

I am sure the Yuengling sisters – Sheryl, Wendy, Debbie, and Jennifer –  feel very proud to be part of something that is bigger than themselves, the family legacy. Although all 4 of them did not come to the company at the same time, they have been working together since 2004. And together, they have combined over 60 years of brewery experience. The Yuengling philosophy is simple, their business is a family business first and foremost.  They see enriching their local community as a way to help the members of their extended family thrive economically and socially. Can you imagine a beer company being managed by 4 sisters? If this is not women empowerment, I don’t know what is! That in itself calls for a celebration!

Why a little celebration goes a long way

Speaking of celebration, it’s true that technology makes it easy for us to be able to work from home, create great designs, and connect with successful women. But the same technology also opens doors to a lot of negativity and bullies. Being able to follow our passion while taking care  of our home is not easy. Being able to quiet down the noise is not easy either. That’s why we need to celebrate every accomplishment with those who support us. If you come to my house and see me with a beer, that means I am celebrating something and my husband is sitting right next to me. He is the man behind the strong woman! Sometimes it’s a small celebration, but it encourages me to get up and do it all over again the next day. It’s also important to celebrate other women, especially those who inspire us.

Did you know?

Based on volume sold in 2016, Yuengling was the top regional brewery in the U.S.  That means the Yuengling sisters are doing a great job running the family business. And for their 190th anniversary, the company released their limited-edition Lager beer cans. These 5 commemorative cans pay tribute to their history, and the entrepreneurial spirit and relentless determination that has made the company  America’s Oldest Brewery.
