Contrary to popular belief, Endodontic treatment (root canal therapy) is typically a very effective and comfortable procedure. Root canal procedure
Your dentist will take an X-Ray of your bothersome tooth. A root canal becomes necessary when a tooth becomes severely decayed or infected. At the same time, the structure of the tooth must still be able to be restored. If our low dose digital x-ray by Schick reveals decay and infection are present, our dentist will schedule your root canal procedure.
To begin a local anesthetic is injected around the tooth. Acutely inflamed pulp will take a little longer to numb. Next, a dental dam (thin rubber vinyl) is placed in the mouth with a small opening for the affected tooth. A small hole is drilled in the occlusal (chewing) surface so infected/decayed pulp of the tooth can be accessed. The pulp (includes nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue) is removed and the infected area is cleaned thoroughly.
Once the canals are ready to be filled, typically a thermoplastic material called gutta-percha is placed inside. This along with adhesive cement seals the canals. A filling (possibly temporary) then seals where the access hole was originally drilled.
The last thing that will need to be done is to either place a permanent filling or crown. A dental crown will be used to further improve the look and feel of your tooth.
Do I need a root canal?
There are many signs that you might need root canal therapy. The most common being extreme tooth pain when chewing or applying any type of pressure to your teeth.
Additional symptoms are high sensitivity or pain to cold and hot temperatures, even after the hot or cold objects are no longer present, tooth discoloration, gum swelling or tenderness, and a consistent pimple on the gums.
In some cases a patient will need a root canal when no symptoms are present. This is one of the many reasons it is important to always have regular dental check-ups with your Lakeview dentist. Even when your teeth seem bright and healthy, underlying issues can exist.
